Any recommendations on a decent, standalone, network print server for
a USB printer? I already have a router with VPN endpoint, so I don't
need one of those combo-units.

I've used Buffalo's print server since the end of last year. Setup is
easily done in your web browser, and it works smoothly with my Win2000
and with CUPS. The only thing I don't like is the lack of bidirectional
support. This means you can't get ink level information from the
printer.

That may not be good. The printer I plan on using it with is an HP PSC
2410, which has a scanner and memory card slots.

Andrew,

What you want for a All-in-One printer is a USB Device Manager. They cost
more but support multifunction printers
as well as other USB devices at the same time (up to 15 devices, AIW printer
= 3 devices). I have been using
one from Silex SX-1000U which works very well.

Whatever you go for you must check that a) it specifically supports your
printer and b) how well it supports your printer. Be prepared for things
like ink status monitors not to work. Sometimes the network version of the
driver (if there is one) also seems to have reduced functionality.

You might take a look at the HP JetDirect 175x or JetDirect 310. I have
used both. They are similar except the 310 model has upgradeable
firmware. I picked up the JD 175x for $75 on eBay a few years ago and
used it for some time on my PSC 950 before replacing that with a
network-ready model. See:

[Oops - it looks like the 310 is discontinued, but you may find one
available...]

The JetDirect 380x is a wireless version, see
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...34210-396578-87208.html?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN.
I have not used the wireless version.
