I cannot connect my HP Scanner or HP Printer because I get a message that my
computer does not recognize the USB ports. I am running Windows XP. My
machine is clean and up to date and my device manager indicates that all
ports are working. Any suggestions?

The only equipment that I need to use a USB port for is my HP Scanner and HP
Printer. I have five ports on my computer and an external USB with 4 ports.
The computer won't recognize any of the ports.

If you had another device to use it could help localize the problem. I was
thinking there might be a problem with the scanner, especially since you said
the Device Manager doesn't show any problems. Maybe the USB cable is too
long? Or maybe the cable is broken?
Did you install the drivers for the scanner?
Does the scanner or printer work on any other computers?

I only have the one computer. It's strange that both the printer and scanner
won't work. I think it has to go the shop because I can't locate the
problem. How do I get into the BIOS? And what do I look for after I get
there?

The printer and scanner drivers must be installed first before
connecting the
devices to the USB ports. Specific help can be had from
<msnews.microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax>

Did the printer and scanner come with software? Often they include a CD
with an install program that tells you when to plug them in and gets Windows
to recognize them for you.
My Lexmark printer is USB and the install program says to leave it unplugged
until it tells you to plug it in.

Where are you getting this message that says your PC does not recognize your
ports?
