I just built a new computer and had a bad video card. When my tech
removed the defective card she found that she had to re-install the
operating system. After the re-installation none of my usb ports will
work, not even the one in the back that goes directly to the
motherboard. I tried to reinstall the usb drivers from the installation
disk, but it will not let me. It keeps telling me that they are already
there and does not even give me an option to re-install. Does anyone
have any suggestions. HELP... Thanks... Ginger

The tech probably did not install the chipset drivers for your motherboard.
Go to your mobo manufacturers web site and download the latest set of
drivers.

I JS. Thanks for tryoing to help with a quick reply but I already tried
that. After I tried to get the drivers from the installation disk and it
didn't work, I went to the mobo web site and tried to download the
drivers but it told me the same thing and wouldn't let me go past that.
I even tried to look for any upgrades or patches but I got no where. I'm
still up in the air about all this. I keep hitting walls everywhere I
go. I even tried the Microsoft web site and I found lots of people in
the same boat but no solutions. I hate this. I built my computer
instead of purchasing a completed one so I could add on the extra usb
ports and get the thing exactly the way I need, and now the things that
I needed the most won't work.

Have you also checked the BIOS settings related to USB ports? My ASUS
motherboard has quite a lot of things to turn on or off related to the USB
ports...

I assume your XP has SP1 or SP2 installed. USB2 requires at least SP1.
What does Device Manager say about your USB controllers? Go to
Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and check the
USB controller properties. If you have an enhanced host controller
listed, USB2 is available.

Get out the system board CD and install all the system board drivers just
like it was a new install. Then check BIOS and make sure all hardware items
you are using are turned on. One post mentioned the chipset drivers. He/She
wasn't talking about the USB drivers. You need to reinstall the system
board.....

Hi Dougbert.
I also have an ASUS motherboard. I tried to check every way and
everything says it was turned on except for 1. I kept trying to
reinstall that one driver but it never let me. I even tried to update
that one for at least 5 times and then it finally took. Now (at this
point) everyting is finally working. I have no idea why the updates
would not take the first 4 times, but at this point I really don't
care. Everything (except for my sound) is working fine. Things like
this drive me crazy. Now can anyone tell me why my sound is not
working????
Thank you everyone for all the input. I love this board and everyone
connected with it.
Take care. Ginger
