What is the USB connection from the LCD monitor to the computer for? What
would you do with this?

It is a DELL Ultrasharp 1901 FP.

This thing has got USB ports out the yang. I can understand inputs (memory
card reader?), I can understand outputs (speakers?) maybe. But I can't
understand why they want me to connect the monitor to the computer with an
USB cable in addition to the DVI cable. This is on their big multi-colored
installation poster. The only thing I can think of is that it might have
something to do with the optional "sound bar" that I did not get. I'm
planning on NOT connecting the USB on this box, I guess I'll see what
happens and post back.

You connect the monitor to the computer via a usb cable if you want to
use the usb hub onboard the monitor.

That answers that. I'll leave it out for now. Thanks.
Do you know of a practical application where you would want to do this? What
would you be setting up?

If you don't have front usb ports on your case, the usb ports on the
monitor would be nice for plugging in cameras or thumb drives, etc.
