USB Ports not recognizing devices

I recently had to reinstall XP on my PC, have done all the updates and am
running SP3. Whenever I plug anything(triied a flash drive and a
wirelessadapter) into my USB Ports its not being recognized. I have
installed the drivers for the wireless adapter already.. Can anybody help
explain why the USB ports aren't recognizing devices??

Start\control panel\device manager\usb controller anything there ?
