I have xp sp2. I was installing a program that would virtually let me
try out linux installations while still in Windows. Halfway through
the installation, my computer shut off and now my usb ports no longer
work. I get code 39 ("Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"). And
the CD Drives still work.

Things I tried:

-uninstalled the usb drivers and then used the "scan for new hardware"
to reinstall the drivers into device manager (while in safe mode)
-rebooted

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I had this issue this past week.

Reinstalled the OEM Software, chipset, and finally did a OS repair
install. That took care of the issue.

Good Luck

I'm not quite sure what you did. "OS Repair"? Does that mean that
you reinstalled Windows? Also what do you mean when you say
"chipset"; I don't know Windows well enough... Could you go into a
little more detail? Thanks.

Was this the VMWare Player?
It installs a USB filter driver to support USB in guest systems.
Try System restore to the point before you installed it.
If this won't help, remove the USB host controllers in dev. manager,
then reboot and let Windows reinstall them.

Or, ou can go ahead and reinstall VMware. After it fully installed, everything should work.

That worked perfectly!!! I can't thank you enough. That solution was
right in front of me...
