USB port sometimes (!) doesn't recognize 2.0 devices

Hi,
I am experiencing a very strange anomaly with my WinXP SP2 english:

- I am frequently using memory sticks or external HDDs (through USB).
- since a few days I sometimes - but not always - are receiving the message
that the device could work faster if it would get operated in USB 2.0 mode.

BUT

- in the device Manager I can see all USB device drivers successfully
installed
- I can see the USB 2.0 root Hub
- I have tried to use either the 'standard' Intel PCI to USB enhanced Host
controller drivers - or the Intel 82801DB/DBM driver - which is also offered
in the device manager.

The eventlog doesn't tell me anything interesting...

I was searching for an updated USB driver from either Intel or IBM (my PC
manufacturer). I was unable to find anything...

Any idea what I could do?

thanks.

You could check your usb settings in the bios and make sure it is set
to enhanced.

OK, I have an external USB2 with a WD 172AA (eide) drive in it. The Manager
recognises it and the "devise is working" but XPHome wont let me access it.
Any idea what's going on?

Patrick,

would have been nice from you to open a different thread -- seems to be a
completely different problem....

but....maybe an easier:

Did you check the disk management that a partition is on the WD-disk and a
drive letter associated with it?

Do you have two (or more) USB controllers, one of them USB 2 and others USB 1?
Do you use any hubs, cables or plug directly into USB ports on the
motherboard?

I have exactly the same problem as KHB.
I'm on a IBM T41 Thinkpad laptop, with WinXP Pro SP2 and Lacie P3 250Gb
External HDD. Sent my Lacie for repair, came back unchanged, so shouldn't be
a hardware problem.

Anyhow, I have 4 USB controller,
1x "Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD", and
3x "Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller 24C2/24C4/24C7"

Like KHB explains, the doesn't seem to connect as USB 2.0, but rather as a
USB 1.1. device. At times, which I can only describe as random occurances, I
get the HDD connected as 2.0 Hi Speed device, but it may abruptly (even
during file transfer) disconnect and immediately reconnect again, but as a
USB 1.1. device and with the error message KHB described.

As I'm on a laptop, I only have two USB connectors available, don't know how
they are wired to the motherboard.

Have the same problem as KHB.
Checked the BIOS, my IBM does not have the option of "Enhanced" in the BIOS
setup.

Hi Nic,
I have same model (T41). It has *only* USB 2.0 controllers; the USB 1 controllers
visible in device manager are actually pseudo creatures for supporting 1.1 devices
(to skip all the gory details..)
So there is some electrical problem - hopefully, in the cable, not in the disk drive.
If the obvious measures (checking all cables, tightening all connectors) do not help,
it's the time to call nearest Lenovo clinic (-_-) and make appointment with a computer physician.

Hi again,

been testing the whole shebang back and forth;
plugged the HDD to a HP laptop. Worked fine, and device manager on that
computer showed exactly the same USB controllers: 1x Enhanced USB 2 and 3x
"regular" USB controllers. Had the same Intel 82801-chipset.

So, it seems you are, unfortunately, quite right in saying that this is a
hardware issue. And what's even more unfortunate is that the porblem is
widespread; I've been reading different newsgroups for the past couple of
days and the same "non hi speed" issue bothers different type of devices
plugged into the computer.

If anyone has ideas or further knowledge on the issue, please reply!

Regards,
Nic

did you ever fix your problem? I am having exactly the same issue on a T41.

Thanks in advance

Hardware problem. Had the guys at IBM replace the motherboard. Works like a
charm. Still, shitty problem, luckily I had warranty left.

IBM does not recognize the problem as "frequently occuring". I had to
explain it many times. I finally managed to prove my point by taking out my
harddirve and installing another, which had a fresh Windows XP installation.
With the fresh HDD installed, my own T41 still didn't recognize USB 2, while
another T41, now with my drive, worked perfectly and did recognize USB 2.
This showed that it was a hardware failure.
