Hello

I have a EagleTec (USB 2.0 512 MB - ET-BI2UPXGMA) flash disk (FD) that
works fine except in one computer belonging to a friend.

On that computer (P4 running Windows XP Home), when you plug the FD in,
it says the FD is not formatted and would I like to format it now. The
FD is already formatted, full of data, and works fine in other machines
running XP Home.

I have tested it in the 2 x front & two x back USB ports on that
computer and get the same error message. I have also plugged in & used
a printer successfully on each of those USB ports.

I have uninstalled the device and let Windows find it again on reboot
but nothing improves. I have also installed the correct driver for this
model from the EagleTec website but still the same error message.

Hoping someone may have some thoughts.

Thanks in anticipation.

Have you tried it on the other machines since it became unreadable
on that machine ? The basic data structures may have got corrupted
somehow and that may be why its no longer readable.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have and it is working fine still.

FWIF, and it's likely not much, the reported problems with removable
drives under XP SP2 are becoming so numerous, that I suspect that there
is a fundamental problem that has been introduced in XP SP2 that is the
cause.

In that case, take a reader that works to read it on your
system, to the friend's system and try it.

I think you may have missed the point. The reader is working - in all
other computers just not on my friends computer. I am not blessed with
a range of spare readers to try - I'm afraid - just this one.. Thanks
anyway.

Reader, or "flash disk"?

What is a "flash disk"? Proper terminology is key.

A flash disk is not a reader. What do you have and what
dose the friend have? You've essentially left out all the
important details about what you're doing.

Sorry for the confusion It was you that used the term, reader, and I
went off on the reader tangent from there.

What I have is USB Flash Disk as stated in my original post and the
problem I have is as described in the original post. My friend has the
computer that won't read my flash disk. Summary: 1 x flash drive, 1 x
computer

I have just had two semi computer-literate people read that original
post and both understand exactly what the problem is from reading it ,
so hopefully it is reasonably clear.

Thanks

Just to clarify further, this website shows/describes the exact flash
drive I have:-

The link you provided in your subsequent post was helpful.
What you're calling a flash disk is more commonly called a
USB Flash thumbdrive... there are other less common
terminologies but the "USB" and "thumb" or "key" or a
similar representation of the form-factor helps us to
understand that the interface controller for this flash
memory is inside the device.

The confusing part was that there is no such thing as a
Flash Disk, the manufacturer should not have called it that.
Disk are round platters/mediums, and there are many odd
things out there that might not have an integral USB
interface.

I suspect your friend's Windows' USB settings are
malconfigured. More details about that friend's system
might help, but offhand the first thing i'd try is using
Device Manager to search for a new driver or delete the
controllers and reboot to have them re-PNP.
