I have four usb ports on the back of my Dell desktop computer and think that
one is dead, one works intermittently and the other two are ok. The first
two give me error messages like a "device is not connected" or "device is not
recognized" and any printer or scanner connected there won't work.

Is there any way to bring these two usb ports back to life?

Thanks !!!

Have you checked a) that the ports are not dirty (the gather dust like
mad) and b) that they are connected by wired to the motherboard and
that these wires have come loose?

Within Windows you could try deleting the ports in Device Manager and
then scanning for new hardware so that the drivers are re installed.
This fixed a dodgy CD drive of mine once.

It's not uncommon for certain functions of your motherboard to fail. One
might try a USB hub for the USB ports that are still working.

Check Device Manager status and BIOS port settings.
Try resetting or replacing the cable from port to motherboard.
