USB port dead after going into standby

FJG

Running WinXP Pro on a HP 4000 laptop. All was working until several
days ago. Now, when going into standby the mouse led goes off and moving
the mouse will not resume the computer. If I hit any key or tap the
touch pad the computer will resume and the mouse led activates and the
mouse works. Device managed shows a HID Device for mouse and it is working.

Must add to post, the device manager shows a HID device for the mouse
but the device data screen does not show any power management settings.
The Alps touchpad does show power management in its settings screen.

Is it a problem hitting the touchpad instead of moving the mouse?
Have you tried a different USB mouse?

No, the touchpad works just fine as does all the keys. I think it may be
the HID driver as only the mouse is dead after a suspend or hibernate.
The HID driver properties as shown in the device manager shows no power
manager but my other laptop which works fine does show a power
management tab for the HID device. Appears I need to find a MS driver to
reinstall for the mouse. I checked on the disk thast came with the HP
laptop but I was unable to locate a driver.

I think I failed to express myself clearly. My question was: Does it
cause you a great deal of inconvenience to hit the touchpad instead
of moving the mouse? If it's much the same thing then I wonder why
you would want to spend time in trying to resolve this minor irritation.
 
Check the power management settings on the USB yet? Maybe the problem is
the ports are set to shut off.

Yes, you are very correct but, some of my greatest joys come from
resolving problems like this. Since this laptop (a HP 4129) is the item
I use for learning I could just reinstall the whole OS but then again.

The USB ports are powered on just the HID device has no power settings.
