USB port/CD Burner not detected

I cannot seem to make the plug-and-play burner appear
anywhere in the system. I do not know if the system is
recognizing the appropriate port, or if the port is the
problem. How can I tell if the port is the issue, or
whether it is not detecting the hardware itself? How can
I resolve it? I need to back up my drive.

Hi Caren,

Hit the winkey+pause/break to open system properties (or go through the
control panel). Click on the hardware tab, then on Device Manager. Does the
device or the port it's attached to show here? If not, you may need to
enable detection in the system BIOS.

Thanks, Rick; I am reluctant to mess with BIOS, daughter's
laptop. The drive does not appear anywhere in Windows
(external CD RW drive). Frustrating! Any solutions or
explanations welcome.

Hi Caren,

How about the port it is connected to? Does that show?

Yes, Rick, it is detecting the ISEE 1394 port. We
downloaded the software from Sony yesterday to support
Windows XP, so it should be compatible, in theory. I
think that perhaps it is not making a good connection,
because it doesn't seem like a tight fit.

Hi Caren,

Are you plugging a USB cable into a firewire card?

No, I had the right cable, but it didn't fit well, was too
loose (it's the one which came with the CR RW drive). I
replaced it today, and now it works! Thanks for the help!
