My new computer with Windows XP won't make my old parallel printer go. The
printer (6 year-old HP LaserJet 5L) still works fine, gives an excellent
print job.

Is there such a thing as a USB to Parallel adpater/converter that might
allow me to connect the old printer with a USB port instead of the parallel
port?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Garth

Have you looked at www.hp.com for XP drivers for your
printer?
Six years is two life-times for computer equipment, lasers
are very much less money now, you might consider a new
printer.

If it doesn't work with parallel, adding an extra chunk of hardware isn't
going to make it much better. Unless of course, you don't have a parallel
connection.

That printer should work just fine with XP though.

Have you compared the parallel port mode on your old and new machines?
Enter BIOS setup and set the mode as it was on the old machine
(try simple unidirectional and bidirectional - not EPP or ECP).

The OP may not have a parallel port on their PC. The USB to Parallel
adapters do exist.

Maybe you're right... then why the OP just didn't tell they don't have parallel port.
If so, this would be junk in junk out situation.

The 5L works well with XP. Use the native XP driver as a start using
the Add Hardware wizard. If you have trouble with this, see Cari's site
at http://www.coribright.com/Windows/.
