Hi,
Of course is space limitted, but suppose that will do it as backup.

Is the quality as good on an USB stick as on an external HDD?

I would'nt rely on a stick for backup, but then I dont rely on backups to a
single form of media either

All of my files on my laptop like pictures, music, and other stuff is
on a maxtor 320gb external, haven't had any problems with it. I also
carry around a 2gb usb flash drive full of utilities and that hasn't
crashed... Just remember, if its electronic, it can and will fail and
any given moment...

That all lines up with my ideas and i needed some extra information to
convince my son who got the advice of an experts that an USB stick is ok.

Archival backups should be done to high quality CD/DVD/Blu-ray media.
The integrity of the back-ups should be verified periodically and fresh
copies made.
If you are totally anal, that is.
All hard drives and all USB devices will eventually fail at the worst
possible time.

I personally seen a USB flash key (stick) be erased by an
electrostatic discharge. USB flash memory should be recommended to
beuse to "transport" files between PCs and not for "long-term" backups.
