We have 2 new laptops, a Dell Inspiron and a HP. Both
systems have XP Pro and sp's installed. We have tried
multiple brands on optical mice on both machines with the
same results. XP does not see the mouse either from a cold
boot or hot plug. From a cold boot the mouse will light
for a second or two then as the OS loads it goes bye bye..
Can anyone help?

Did you follow the setup instructions for the mice. Failure to do so will
keep them from working.

What setup instructions are you referring to? I have optical mice on 12
systems running XP Pro, and all I have to do to set them up is plug them in!
:-)

Here's your problem: If you are not using a USB to PS/2
adapter, you need to enable Legacy USB support in your
BIOS. You MUST do this, or your mouse will NOT work.
(Unless you use a USB to PS/2 adapter).

Sorry, was thinking of wireless optical. Mine won't work unless I install
drivers first.

Legacy USB devices have to be enabled in the BIOS. Some
mainboards default to disabled. Something along the lines
of enable legacy USB or enable USB keyboard and USB
mouse.
