USB not working at all

Hi all,

I'm experiencing a strange problem with my Compaq Armada E500 notebook and
WinXP Pro SP1: USB is not working at all - although I installed the USB
update from Windows Update.

The problem is as follows:
- According to the Device Manager, the USB Root Hub as well as the
Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI-USB Host Controller is working without any
problems.
- The E500 notebook is equipped the the must-recent BIOS.
- If I plug in a USB device in the USB 1.1 port of my notebook, nothing
happens - XP doesn't recognize the device at all.
- Hence, I thought, installing a USB 2.0 PC-Card would be a good idea to
bring USB to life.
It wasn't: WinXP freezes as soon as I install the PC Card (and even
freezes at boot time, if I install the PC Card prior to booting WinXP).

Because the USB ports are not defect (I verified that with an older
Windows), I have no idea.

Can anybody help?

Kind Regards,

Mike
