i was wondering, would it be cool to replace a nand chip found in usb
flash drives. I recently came upon a flash drive of mine and wanted to
know if replacing nand chip is ok or practical; the original chip seems
loose.

also how many pins do these chips have, i tried counting, to no avail.

9 out of 10 times it's better to trash the usb drive and get a new
one. The cost of ordering a compatible replacement chip, the training
to handle the SMD and the necessary equipment to safely desolder &
remove the old one and solder in a new one... not worth it at all.

A good 256MB device is like $30 give or take and I know there are
other good deal on larger memory sticks. There's eve a swiss army
knife with built in USB memory storeage (is that allowed in airports?)
and for a really large need, microdrives. 5 and 6GB USB microdrive
runs about $150 and is noticeably faster than a 4.7GB DVD (r or rw)
