USB Mouse "unkown device" Problem

For some reason my intellimouse Optical USB mouse has stopped working.

The mouse works on other machines, but other machines mice don't work
on this one. They all come up as unknown devices.

Other USB devices are still functioning fine on this machine, it's just
the mice.

I've tried uninstalling in safe mode, downloading the latest driver
from MS, and reinstalling but it does the same thing every time.

Any ideas what's going on?

Also... sometimes when I plug the mouse back in after uninstalling and
reinstalling all the host controllers it give me a "Device has
malfunctioned, unable to recognise" command.

If I look at the "unknown device" in the device manager, it doesn't say
any drivers are installed. If I try to manually select the driver from
a list, it only gives me one selection: unkown driver.

Chances are, you are installing the wrong driver for the host controller.
Un-install all usb then reboot. Once up, insert the mouse and let XP do the
sorting. For some more general hints,

Good luck.
