I have a Compaq Presario with the little built in mouse
thing that is difficult to use. I want to plu in a usb
mouse, (there is no ps2 type connector,) but when I do it
works for a few seconds then stops working. I am trying to
use a Logitect optical mouse.

Some laptops require that the on-board touchpad or pointing stick be
disabled for an external mouse to work. Older Compaq laptops had a
machine setup program that set boot device order, screen properties, and
mouse selection. If yours does not have this, disable the touchpad in
Device Manager to test if it needs to be disabled.

Did you install the driver before connecting the mouse (if Logitech says
it needs a driver, that is...)?
