USB Mouse Problem

I'm having this really annoying problem that I can't seem to nail down the
cause. I have a Microsoft Sidewinder gaming mouse. Every day or two, it will
stop responding completely. The cursor is still there, the mouse has power
(all the lights are still on and my dpi meter still functions). My keyboard
and all other usb devices are not affected. If I unplug the mouse and try to
plug it back in, then all of my usb ports go dead. Only restarting Windows
restores them. I've checked Device Manager, everything looks to be working
properly. My drivers are up to date, even my motherboard bios is current. I
don't think it's the mouse either, I bought it to replace a Logitech G5 that
did the exact same thing. I am dual booting between XP pro and Vista if that
makes a difference. I just can't figure this out, and all of my web searching
has only found people with similar problems, but no answers. Can any of you
help? Thanks in advance!

Install the chipset installation utility for youre MB chipset, download it
from
its mfg (intel/amd,etc),it configures USB & XP OS.Also, which version of
microsoft mouse software do you run, current version is v6.3

I have updated my chipset now direct from Intel. The mouse software I have
is 6.2 so I will try and find the newer version. Windows Update does not find
it, and the update program within the Intellipoint software isn't working
either. Thank you for the swift response, we'll see if this works.

You should be able to find the latest intellipoint software (v6.3)

Intellipoint never did show up in Windows Update.
