My USB Mouse and USB Keyboard ("Microsoft Business Hardware Pack") stop
working if i leave the computer untouched for a longer time (e.g. over
night). As even the red sensor light of the optical mouse is off, it seems to
me as if som power-saving options switches off the mouse and keyboard or the
corresponding usb ports.

Rebooting (as usual) helps, but the problem occurs again if the computer is
left idle for some time.

Does anybody have asolution for this?

go into device manager and expand the USB root hubs. right click,
properties, turn off power management so that they do not ever get
turned off to save power.

I tried this but it diddnt help. I now realized thet even after rebooting the
mouse and keyboard do not always work. The red light of the optical mouse
switches on during POST, but right before the welcome scrfeen appears, it
goes off again.

is this a driver problem?

Had you previously just installed Anti Virus software when your mouse
started acting up?
My mouse stopped working right after installing eTrust Anti Virus on the
reboot.
