USB mouse connected to laptop

I bought a new compaq laptop. Now, Im trying to connect a USB mouse to it,
the mouse works for 5secs, and then stops working. I'm wondering if someone
can help me out with this problem?

I just had an online chat with a tech support agent from compaq. Followed the
instructions (installed chipset drivers from the link he/she sent me; booted
in safe mode, uninstalled USB ports, booted in normal so they re-install
themselves) But the problem still persists. Any help would be really
appreciated.

I bet they're trying not to have to admit it's a hardware issue with
the USB on the laptop. Have you tried another mouse? Do other USB
devices work?
