I just bought a D-Link DI-604 router expecting it to have a modem inside -
my fault, should have read more carefully!

I have a USB dsl modem but the router needs an Ethernet connection to work.

Is there any way I can connect from the USB modem to the router with a
special cable?

Many thanks,

Noel

Nope you will need to either atach the modem to a PC or replace it with
Ethernet connection modem. Why?

Please see.

Note: Unfortunately USB to ethernet converters which will convert a USB
DSL/Cable modems USB port to ethernet do not exist. The problem being
basically that there is no way to load the necessary drivers onto a
DSL/Cable modem to let it know how to talk to the converter.

???. Most current DSL Modems offer connection either via ethernet or
USB. If yours does not, call your DSL provider [probably the phone company]
for a replacement. Does your computer have a ethernet port? Most computers
manufactured within the last five-six years do, look and be sure.

You will either need to get your modem replaced by the telephone company for
something that will connect to your router, or

Install a network card, and connect the router to it.. then set up Internet
Connection Sharing for the benefit of anything connected to the router..

Thanks everyone - the old dsl modem only has a USB plug, no Ethernet
connection.

I will buy a new router - modem and sell the router on eBay!

Rather keep the Ethernet router and either sell the USB "modem" to
someone you don't like, or if no-one you dislike enough, kill it :-)

(A USB "modem" does nothing to protect your PC against direct access)
