Hi:
I am posting this on the chance that someone may know a way out of my
problem.

I have an Attache USB memory stick, and in the past 24 hours whenever
I plug it in I get a message "USB device not recognized". Its clearly
the device itself that is the problem, since I get this message on two
different machines.

Does anyone know of a way I can bring this memory stick back to life?

Thanks in advance

John Baker

it may be defective or it
may require formatting.

try and see if windows
can find it via computer
management under
admin tools.

When a USB device is generating the Windows error "USB device not
recognized" most Windows tools will not ever see it. You will need
to "clear" out the Device Manager "settings" for this device and then
hope XP can re-detect it correctly.

Are you able to access the device in spite of the error?

You can find information, troubleshooting, FAQ and formatting
utilities from the manufacturers site:

Try it on yet another system. If you find a system that recognises it,
copy the data off immediately. Then retire the device.

USB memory sticks have a tendency to suddenly and irretrievably fail. This
is why they are not appropriate for any kind of backup, only for convenient
transfer of documents that exist elsewhere.

Thanks. I fear that's what has happened. Tried it in another system
and had the same result!

Hi John,

On the off chance that it is a heat related problem, try putting it in a
plastic bag, put it in the refrigerator between two objects, keep the door
closed for 10 minutes, take the bag out, go to the computer, take the memory
stick out of the bag and plug it in. If it works, copy the most important
stuff first.

Did you consult their WWW page to see their ideas? If you don't want
the device anymore, I'll take it.

Didn't have the refrigerator fix on my list.

Thanks for the input.
