USB memory stick format

I've noticed that when I insert a memory stick, the drive info says its
either RAW format or there's no format diplayed. The drive is usable and
reads and writes ok.

If I run ChkDsk on it the drive info then says it's FAT32, which would be
correct.

Is this a common fault with USB memeory sticks or a Vista issue? I'm using
Windows Vista RC1.

I alwasy get a message saying that I should diskcheck the removable
media or just use it as it is
this perticular USB drive has never caused me troubles using it in any
other pc and I never get that message anywhere else
so I guess it is a feature ^^

one has to be careful here as some older usb mem sticks were formated in
plain FAT and the newer ones in FAT32 my best advice is to find the
manufacturuer of your mem stick and see if there help section can throw light
on your problem,, i personly found my maufacturuer and emailed them that way
i found out one of my mem sticks was fat and i had formated it to fat32 and
got all sorts of problems but luckily formatting it back to fat save my bacon
 
That's interesting, I re-formatted mine to FAT32 and it works fine but as
I've said, inserting the stick in the USB port windows reports RAW or no
format!

For me it seems to be a Windows reporting issue rather than a Format problem.

I have not encountered any USB problems in Vista yet. I
have used a USB external drive with no problem and I have
used USB sticks with no problem. The external USB hard
drive is NTFS formatted. Some of my USB sticks are NTFS
formatted and some are FAT32. So, I don't think the problem
is Vista, or Windows, based. I have both x86 and x64
version of Windows XP and Vista, and have not seen any
problems with USB in any of the systems.

I think your problem may either be system hardware related
or something wrong with your operating system installation.
