What benefit would having a usb memory key as an additional component of a
new computer I will be purchasing?

Anyone know?

Is that the removable memory device ? If so I treat it like a big floppy
drive. When I don't want to waste a CD to transfer information to another
computer. It is handy to put some pictuures, data, or small programs on and
take to work or a friends house to show them. Not as big as the cd either.
Just slip it in your pocket. I like to use a very small program to show off
the pix with as I know how to use it. I can put that on the drive with the
pix and run it on most any computer.

Yeah like Ralph was saying if its removable its just a big ol floppy.

However from personal experince I've noticed some memory keys will not play
nice when switching between Windows machines and Mac's (the discovery of this
was a pain the ass). So if you intend to use it for that purpose research or
ask around as to what memory keys play nice with the computers you want to use
them with.
Also any computer running below Windows XP/Mac OSX (Linux I dont know about)
may have issues with knowing what the key is when you plug it in without a set
of drivers already installed in the computer.

But if none of these things apply to you by all means pick one up. They're
handly lil things to have around for transporting files.

Compact storage. You might want to look at the Nomad Muvos. They are
essentially a usb memory key, but with a headphone jack so that they can
function as a *very basic* mp3 player.
