how wuld i format a USB drive?

thx for rply
It is already formatted, or should be ... right-click on it and go to properties.

Windows is treating it correctly as a USB device ... take it out of it's box and fit it into the PC and there you go. ;)

A word of warning ... USB drives are usually formatted to FAT, this is so you can "safely remove" as and when ... if you use NTFS file system, make sure you also use "safely remove hardware" thingie in the toolbar by the clock. :thumb:

hey thx for the reply but what do u mean by taking out of its box? and what shuld i do under properties? the maxtor isnt a external case thing its a 80gb usb drive. kinda like a usb pen drive only 80gb... it needs power and usb.

Then you cannot take it out for a walk, ignore that reply.

Your drive is being seen correctly as any USB drive is. :thumb:

"Properties" give you the information you were looking for ... is it formated, yes it is, init?

Right-click on it again ... now, read the list ... does it have the word 'Format' in that list. ;)

This device is working properly.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter.
optimize for quick removal
all dashes under volumes tab
drvier version 5.1.2535.0
USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_MAXTOR_6&PROD_Y080L0&REV_YAR4\409020001148&0
is the device instance id. nothing about format though

huh!

Just right-click the drive, any drive (except CDrom drive) and you should see the word 'Format' there in the list.

Why do you need to format it

no the problem is that its not even showing up as a drive in My Computer so i cant say properties. the only properties i can access is the properties in device manager (which is the stuff i posted in my previous post)

Forget properties ...

Just ... right-click ... do nothing else ... read the list.

says update driver. disable. uninstall. scan for hardware changes and properties in device manager
also i tested on mulitple computers so i know its just not my usb port.

ah, right, now then ... I see

Sorry, I was the one not reading what you said correctly ... must get a new brain. :o

OK, try this ... go to Administative Tools / Computer Management / Disk managment ... is it listed there?

no sry it only shows my c, d drives and my ipod thats it...
is it toast or what? :(
oops, looks like it is. :(

In 'disk managment' you will be able to see unformated drives ... it's how we cheat to to test a drive out.

Do you have an external USB Powered HUB you can try it on?

Once in device manager try uninstalling the device. Once uninstalled start the add hardware wizard, plug in your usb drive and follow the prompts.
Also check the following services aren't disabled
LOGICAL DISK MANAGER
LOGICAL DISK MANAGER ADMISTERATIVE SERVICE.

I had this problem too. Silly people, I had the exact same harddrive, they ship it to you without formatting it at all.

I had this problem a few weeks ago, and I'll tell you exactly how to solve it. ^_^ It won't show up in 'My Computer' unless it is formatted properly.

First off, hit Run. Then type in 'compmgmt.msc'. Very simple, ne~?

Next click on 'Disk Management'.

If you've plugged in your harddrive to the compie, there should be something there about your harddrive. Weither it be healthy or unpartitioned, it should be on the list near your other harddrive(s).

Right click on it and hit 'Format' or 'Create Partition', I can't remember which one I hit, but either will do. This should most certainly work.

I just can't believe they've been shipping these lately unformatted. >< People these days get lazier and lazier~

Hope this solves your problem!
