My problem is that when I plug in any type of USB mass storage device -
digital camera or thumbdrive I never get the message "finding new
hardware". But I can see the device fine. I can open the drive,
retrieve or store files, etc., etc. However I cannot unplug the device.
Whenever I attemp this will get a fatal (blue screen) error and have to
restart the system. Other USB devices work fine. Any help is most
appreciated.

May have resolved the USB problem by removing a Spyware program I had
checked out some time back. In my case it was NOT Alurias
SpyEliminator, but a similar program under the same circumstances.
Apparently the actual folder and fragments were still on the system and
must have been causing a conflict. Used Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2006 to
force remove the program. Then deleted the folder from my system.
Appears resolved.

I managed to find the basic solution at:

Finally found the solution. I had to uninstal a package called Alurias
SpyElliminator.
