Over the years several people (including myself) have asked whether it is
possible to install generic USB mass storage drivers into Windows 98, in
the way it is implemented in Win ME. This would avoid having to install
drivers for every different brand or type of removeable USB drive,
including the many varieties of tiny flash drives around there.
Yesterday while using Google to search for something else, I happened upon
the following on a Chinese web page containing links to various utilities:
http://www.zjjdaily.com/doc5/usbsetup.exe
The description is in Chinese but it mentions Win98SE in the.
The program is packed with UPX; if you unpack it you get a WinRAR
self-unpacking archive. Inside is a setup program (in Chinese) and the USB
drivers and .INF files from Windows ME.
It sure looks like someone has found a way to shoehorn WinME's mass
storage drivers into Win98SE. Anyone brave enough to try? Do so at your
own risk. Unfortunately I don't have a suitable test machine at the
moment.
