Usb Malfunction

Any advice on how to get my USB to work again??
it just suddenly stopped working and i have tried it on numerous amount of computers but they all come up the same...

USB device cannot be recognised
One or more USB devices on this computer have malfunctioned and windows does not recongnise it.

My USB has loads of important work on there and really desperate for it so all advice is welcomed.

Do you know anybody with Linux on their computer..? If so go plug it into their's and see what ahppens..Also what make of USB is it..? Presuming its a small USB dongle...
