reconize the usb that it has malfauctioned.so what do i have to do or where
do i have to go to fix that problem?

Does the iPod work on other PCs? Do other USB devices work with your PC?

Impossible to diagnose correctly with the info you've given, too many
variables.

Your motherboard probably has an ICH5 or ICH5R Southbridge chip.
You can damage the USB ports on those.

http://onfinite.com/libraries/179057/2ea.jpg

If none of the USB ports respond, when some device other than
the iPod is plugged in, that may be the problem.

You can use CPUZ to check the details of your hardware.

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz/cpuz_152.zip

Run "cpuz.exe", click the "Motherboard" tab, note the
motherboard details, including

Chipset _____ ______________
Southbhridge _____ ______________

If it is not ICH5 or ICH5R, then try another USB port, this
time, using a different USB device to test. Try a USB mouse
for example.

ok for the chipset it just says ati express 200 (rs480) and for the
southbridge it just says ati sb400

OK, so it isn't the Intel chipset then. Those are ATI chips.
So you don't have a failed ICH5 or ICH5R.

Have you tested any of the other ports ? Have you tested
using something other than the iPod ? I use a USB mouse when
I need to test ports here.

If you want to view hardware information for devices plugged into
USB ports, this tool can show the enumeration info. Click one
of the dated links, and download a copy of "UVCView.x86.exe".

http://web.archive.org/*/http://dow...f-a31d-436b-9281-92cdfeae4b45/UVCView.x86.exe

The results look similar to this. Click on a "DeviceConnected"
item, then view the config info on the right hand side. The
config info is read from the USB device, and that helps prove
the USB works.

If you can see that stuff, and yet the USB functions
don't work, it may require deleting the USB entries in
Device Manager, and allowing Windows to re-detect them.
Instructions are at the bottom of this page.

There is a remote chance there could be a USB power problem.
But if that were the case, moving to a different stacked pair
of USB ports, should give you a working port. Sometimes a
Polyfuse can fail permanently, so that the USB port no
longer gets power. Polyfuses are normal self-healing, and
recover on their own if tripped.

Did you try cleaning up the USB stack via Device Manager ? The steps to follow
are at the bottom of the page.

To check that your hardware works, you could use a Linux LiveCD, such as
Ubuntu or Knoppix, and use the "lsusb" program to verify whether a USB
device can be detected. If so, then the problem is with WinXP. WinXP
uses a built-in driver for USB - the only thing the motherboard needs
in the way of support, is to have chipset drivers installed. Those
are usually provided on a motherboard CD, or in the case of a Dell/HP/Gateway
would be already installed in the OS provided on the hard drive for you.
