I have a MSI MS-6585 1.0 mainboard, with a Pent 4, 2.57 GHz processor, 2x80
GB HDD, 1GB RAM running Win XP Home SP1. The mainboard provides for 6 USB
ports in 2 of which I have external USB hard drives for storage.
Here's what happened.....the system has been operating without a hitch for
about 2 months. Today I had a scanner plugged into one of the front USB
ports and a printer in the other. The 2 ext HDs are in rear ports and rarely
unplugged. After scanning for a couple of hours I took a break leaving the
system on and when I
came back the computer could not recognize the scanner or the HDs......the
printer works OK. The scanner works ok on another computer as do the HDs.
When I hot swap
ports and cables to try to isolate the source all I get is the message "USB
Device not Recognized. One of the USB devices on this computer has
malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it...."
Since the machine also hangs frequently and in the I emailed MSI but they
were
non-responsive. I'm wondering if the mainboard is the problem....or ???
Any comments or advice will be appreciated.
