My new keyboard is USB and, unlike the old PS/2 keyboard which enabled me to
enter setup as BIOS loaded, the new keyboard is not enlivened until the USB
drivers are loaded.

This means that by eth time eth USB keyboard is connected, the start up
phase ahs gone way past eth stage where one can invoke the BIOS setup.

Could anyone give me a steer please as to how I might get around this
problem ?

Open your BIOS and enable USB legacy support.
(Use your old keyboard in order to open the BIOS)

Attach a PS/2 keyboard.. go into BIOS, and enable Legacy USB support and USB
keyboard support if available..

It still may not always work, so keep your old keyboard handy..

Plug a PS2 keyboard in, get into the BIOS, check to see if Legacy USB
support is available and activated.

Hello Greenie,

Thanks for the tip. Legacy support is not avail;bale in BIOS (and I just
downloaded eth latest BIOS which I had anyway). Maybe its time to replace
my 4 year old Dell ?

I suppose it would be cheeky to ask if you have any ideas on my other post -
blank screen until I press either ESC or the spacebar ?

Can't help with the blank screen problem really, you could try a
"Repair Install" if you Dell CD isn't one of those that sets your
machine back to the factory defaults, either way back up your important
data first.
