Can one use a PS2/USB adapter to make a standard PS2 keyboard work in
a USB port, or would a keyboard have to boast USB functionality when
bought to function with a USB port?

Depends on what you mean by "adapter".

A simple straight-through wired adapter will not allow using a
(standard) PS/2 keyboard on a USB port. If it's a newer keyboard
meant to work on either, it will, but "usually" those keyboards start
out with a USB plug and the adapter is to use on a PS/2 port.

On the other hand, there are adapters that have a built-in
microcontroller to convert the signals, which will work. This may be
an example:

It might sound stupid but just but a usb keyboard. A standard, no frills one
wouldn't be expensive at all.

But be sure to hang on to your old keyboard for the times when you need to
make changes to your BIOS.
