USB jump drive no longer works with Vista

Cruzer jump drive does not work with Vista but does work on my other comptuer
with XP. It did work until recently but now the system wants to format the
drive instead of allowing me to drag and drop files. The multimedia drive
also quit working.

Using Vista Premium on a Toshiba A205 -S4607. Have been unable to find an
email for tech support from Toshiba. Will not buy another computer from them!

Can anyone provide a fix. Have tried using and earlier restore point along
with deleting the UBS drivers under System - devices but to no avail. Mouse,
printer, keyboard, and Matrox external disk drive are all recognized

Im experiencing much the same problem. I upgraded to Vista home in January of
2007. I had been using a Lexar jump drive to transfer files between home and
school for all 2007 and much of 2008. About a month ago the jump drive
stopped working. I figured I would fix it when I wipe out my harddrive (I do
this twice a year) because I was between classes. I have registered for a
summer class and now need the jump drive to work.

I must believe that a possible update was installed sometime in the past
three months that has 'messed' with the drivers and operation for the jump
drive. I tried reloading the drivers from the disk that came with the Gateway
computer. It gave me the following message:

Compatibility issue between Texas Instruments PCIxx12 FlashMedia Reader and
Windows.

I also noticed while checking the device manager that the driver for the
Mass Storage Controller was missing. I tried loading from manufacturers disk
again with no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated -

There are very widespread problems in Vista properly recognizing USB devices
and there seems to be more than one cause. I would suggest that you first
download and install the fix in the article below. I have found it
effective in several recent cases.

Cumulative update rollup for USB core components in Windows Vista

Thanks for the input but I tried both of 32 & 64 bit files. Running each of
them resulted in "This update does no apply to your system"

Do you have any other ideas

I got the same message. Im running a 32-bit system. I also tried downloading
service pack 1. I had already got this through Automatic updates, however,
and would not let me install.

Any other ideas?

Matt

Thanks for the input. Tried what GTS wrote however the problem still exists.

Please keep input coming as I am confident someone out there with this
problem has found a solution as it appears the problem is not uncommon.

Still no luck. I tried the batch file suggestion from the link given. It
didn't work. However I did recognize something else that may help. When I
plug the jump drive into any of the usb ports I get a message saying 'USB
Device Not Recognized'.

Matthew used the patch an got "Device Not Recognized" after running the patch
I still got "Format this drive". Basically no change from the previous status.

Since this a more common problem then I thought there must be someone out
there who has the answer.

Keep the input coming!

Haven't hear any replies in a while. Have tried all suggestions with no luck.
If the issue is dead, I appreciate all your help.

Have you tried reformatting it on your XP system in FAT32 format and then
trying it again in Vista?

I just heard back from Texas Instruments and they said they do not offer
support for their parts used in computers by other manufacturers. I also
tried just recently to use a wireless game controller through the USB port.
Although no error messages popped up, the controller did not work. I went to
the Logitech website and downloaded and installed the newest drivers with no
luck.

Also tried the last suggestion - re-formating the jump drive as FAT32 (which
it already was) on a XP system and then tried acessing it on my Vista system
- also no luck.

I was kinda of hoping there would be an easy fix. Im very happy with Vistas
interface, but never had a problem with XP. Do you think Microsoft monitors
this site? I'd love to here from a proffesional. Maybe a new update?

Microsoft does NOT monitor this "site".

Im still hoping someone out there has an answer to this issue. I have
contacted Gateway, the maker of the laptop Im using. They say contact
Microsoft. I have also contacted TI the maker of the media flash reader who
also said contact Microsoft. And lastly I have contacted Lexar the maker of
the jump drive Iam trying to use - they were the most helpful asides from the
help I have received here. This is what they said:

Use the device manager by right-clicking computer icon, and then selecting
manage.

Check disk drives - (The Lexar wasn't recognized there).

Check USB for Mass Storage or Unknown Device. Then Uninstall, then replug
the drive.

When I did this the cpu would process and run through a couple of changes
where the OS would recognize the Drive in the USB port as Mass Storage
Device, then USB Root Hub, and finally back to Unknown Device.

I tried new drivers from Gateway that covered the Flash device for my
particular model, and also talked to a tech who told me to download an Intel
chip driver which I did, with no luck.

I also tried attaching a Logitech Rumble Pad cordless gaming device. When I
went to Game Controllers from Control Panel. * It definetly recognized the
controller *, but when I went to the test screen and tested the functions -
pressing buttons, moving game sticks and direction pad - nothing happened.

As I said I have contacted everyone involved. I am sending an email back to
Lexar, but Im pretty sure the issue is with Vista. Any ideas/help ?

Thanks again,

I checked System and it says I am running SP1.

I went into BIOS where I disabled Legacy USB. When I returned to desktop and
inserted the flash drive. The drive was recognized and offered open lexar or
change speed. When I opened lexar, it showed the folder Lexar-1 which I had
created on another cpu. When I tried to open this folder I received the
following message:

F:\Lexar refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard
drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is
properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network,
and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have
been moved to a different location.

I then checked the device manager, and the same process ran from Mass
Storage to Unknown device.

Is there any way I can determine wether the problem is related to the USB
ports, Vista, or the actual flash drive? As I said my game controller is
recognized but doesn't work. They do work on my other xp system.

To whom it may concern:

I gave up and rebooted. Things are running well. No problems with usb ports
- jump drive and game controller function. Thanks for all the time and help.
