USB installations

This should be basic stuff, but I'm missing something and
can't find anything on the Microsoft knowledge base.

When a person has mis-installed a USB device (plugged it
in too soon) so that they have an UNKNOWN DEVICE in Device
manager, how do you get it out in Windows XP?

I know that in 98 and ME the procedure is simple: unplug
the device, boot in Safe Mode, remove the device, reboot,
run the installation program and do not plug in the device
until the program tells you or after the next reboot if it
doesn't say.

However, this method doesn't work in XP. Devices are
still detected in Safe Mode. Is there a registry entry I
need to remove or something like that?

Boot XP

Enter Device Manager

Select "Show hidden devices"

Look for "unknown devices" and delete the "bad" device install

If this does not work ing XP regular mode, you can try in 'Safe Mode"

Thanks, but already tried that, both in regular and safe
mode. Device is deleted, but when I reinstall software
and plug in device, it is still detected as an unknown
device, and manually choosing the .INF file doesn't
work... it says "Unknown Device" is a better match.
