I recently had to reinstall XP. Following the reinstall, a Maxtor external
drive I have would not work. When plugged into the USB port, I get a
message about the drive being a high speed device plugged into a low speed
port. The drive worked perfectly before the reinstall. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm no expert, but it occurs to me that;
Your Mobo presumably supports USB2 (high-speed) which is probably required
by the external device.
I,m not sure, but thiere is not any support by standard installation of XP
for USB2.
What I fancy is required, is the SP1 to be installed that does support USB2.

your usb does not support high speed device meaning you
need a USB 2.0 port for that external drive.

Go to the Windows update site to download all the latest updates. The usb 2
, high speed, drivers will be included. Following a re-install do not
forget to re-activate the windows XP firewall and also update your
anti-virus definitions as a high priority.

Get the latest drivers for your USB card. If you don't
know the manufacturer then get a good benchmarking tool
like Aida32. It's free and frequently will give you links
to the manufacturers right on the info page for the device
you are looking at. Keep smiling.
