the first one is a fujitsu siemans whihc came preinstalled
with windows ME, i put xp pro on top of it but it didnt
give me any USB drivers (i.e. in device manager there's
nothing) but there was when it had ME.

The second one is a Compaq N610c notebook and we gave it a
clean install of XP Pro it contains the usb drivers but
doesn't pick up hardware item when u plug them in

could anyone please help me with tips of drivers or
anything else

thanks

Hi

First, update the BIOS and chipset drivers for both machines. Disconnect all USB devices from the machines
Secondly, install SP1 or SP1a on both machines and update all the critical patches.

Thereafter, for Fujitsu Siemens
Check in device manager for the USB controller. If it is there and confirm working properly, connect the USB devices one at each time. Ensure it work properly before connecting the others
If you can see the USB controller but with a yellow? mark, boot in safe mode and log on as administrator, go to device manager and uninstall the USB controller, click apply and OK then reboot
Windows should find the USB controller and install the drivers. Check again in device manager

For the compaq notebook
Go to HP website and download the latest XP compatible USB drivers and then update the USB drivers
Follow the instructions from HP for how to update the USB drivers
If still no avail, go to windows update site, there is a patch for USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 drivers patch update in the recommeded update column
Also check for the PnP feature is enabled
Right click My Computer/Manage/Services and applications/Services
In the right pane, nevigate to the Plug and Play and double click, select auto and click apply and OK

Hope it helps

Pete
