hello, how are you?

I recently purchased a 30GB Fujitsu 2.5 HD and a USB2.0 HDD enclosure.
I am trying to install it on Win2k Server SP4.

I connected the USB cable, the drive powered up (it made a spinny
noise) and received the install new hardware dialogs (not the wizard,
just the small box in the middle of the screen) saying that a USB Mass
Storage Device had been detected and installed.

After the installation, i checked the device manager. In the "Disk
drives" category, there was "USB 2.0 Storage Device USB Device" and in
the "Universal Serial Bus" category there was "USB Mass Storage
device". However, the drive did not appear in Explorer, nor in Disk
Management.

I connected my usb flash card reader that i use with my camera to see
what happened when it installs (it works fine). The only real
difference i can see is that the flash card reader creates a "Generic
Volume" in the "Storage Volumes" category when it installs (i dont
think the reader is usb2.0)

I installed the latest MB USB chipset drivers, but this did not help.

When i right click in Disk Management and select "Rescan drives" the
led on the USB HDD casing goes on for a second, but the drive is never
detected.

Does anyone know what my problem is?

Thanks for your time,
Gareth.

The first thing I would check are jumper settings for the drive. There are
usually four jumper pins next to the ribbon connector on a 2.5" drive. Make
sure these are set to "Master", "Single", or "Cable Select", whichever works
for your drive and system.

Hello.

I set the drive to Device1 (choice of Device0, Device1 or Cable Sel).
this caused the LED on the enclosure to stay on for a lot longer, and
be a lot brighter.

But now I am getting an Error Code 10, device cannot start. In fact I
cannot get back to my earlier situation of having the a USB device and
Dsik Drive installed.

I have just noticed that the 2.5" drive requires 550 mA (according to
the label). I understand that USB supplies 500 mA. Is it possible that
the HD cannot even start with this lower current?

I was looking at my USB devices in device manager. I have a USB mouse,
PDA recharge cable and ADSL Modem. In my device manager i have 3 x USB
root hub, and 1xUSB2.0 root hub. There are 4 USB connectors at the
back of the MB/case, and according to the MB manual, some pins the MB
to connect Front USB2.0 Connectors. Through various combinations, and
looking the "Power" tab in the usb root hub properties has led me to
believe that none of the usb ports are connected to the USB2.0 root
hub (6 available, none ever used) compared to my 3 USB root hubs
(Mouse, PDA, and USB Modem all appear and list current taken). Is this
relevant?

In summary:
Is the USB HDD not starting because there is not enough current?
IS is not starting being detected because my USB2.0 ports are only
pins on my MB and not actually connected to connectors at the back of
my case?

Thanks for your time,
Gareth

The current COULD be an issue, but I would look elsewhere first.

Set the drive to Device 0. This is Master. If you set to Device 1, you are
setting it as Slave to another drive.

If you had the external unit connected to a USB2.0 port, and Windows showed
the devices as connected, then your ports are hooked up to your motherboard.
Windows will not be able to detect the device in any fashion if the ports
are not plugged in to the motherboard header.

I'm still leaning toward a jumper issue.
