Hi

I have a problem and just cannot seem to find an answer anywhere to why this
may be happening.

The problem is with the onboard usb ports. I boot the pc to windows (XP
SP2) as normal but this can only be done without any usb devices plugged in.
Once XP is loaded and I attempt to plug a usb device in, the computer just
powers off and will not start again until I either switch off the switch on
the PSU or take the power lead out for a few seconds. I don't think it's a
usb device fault as it happens with all the usb devices I have (camera,
printer etc.). I have tried deleting the usb ports in the device manager
and letting windows re-install them, had a look on the Microsoft XP update
website but I am up to date.

If I do boot the PC with a usb device plugged in the all it gets to is the
just before where the windows logo comes up, but again just turns off.

I would appreciate if anybody out there has any ideas.

Also, if it is the mobo gone up the wall, what could be the reason why this
has just suddenly happened?

Thanks in advance.

Sure sounds like a hardware problem to me. Possibly the motherboard. Could
be the power supply, but that would me my second guess.

As for why, that's impossible to tell. It could have been a defective part
to begin with, it could have been a power spike that damaged the board, it
could have been something that got plugged into a usb port (or stuck into
it -- got kids?) or just about anything else, including just a random
failure. Things don't last forever, and some don't last as long as they
should.

Cheers for the replies.......
