I have an MP3 player that I hooked up via USB that XP did
not have the drivers for. I unplugged it without clicking
the safely remove hardware icon, now XP won't recognize
it at all, ever!

The same thing just happened to a card reader too! It
was working fine. I guess it got unplugged without
clicking and now Xp won't recognizr it either!

I have rebooted, uninstalled, etc. - nothing I can think
of works! I have all these pics I need to get on my
computer for work and I am screwed! Thanks...

Thanks! That did the trick for the MP3 player, but the
card reader is still acting funky. It recognizes it, but
when I click on it, I get the hourglass for about 10
seconds and then it just shuts the window, and
the "remove" icon disappears from the tool bar. Any
other thoughts? Thanks again.

And if that doesn;t work, try it on another computer. If you unplugged it
while the computer was accessing it, you might have hosed the data, at the
very least.

Hopefully, you didn't ruin your mp3's hard drive. If you didn't, try to re-initialize the unit (unplugged) and then try to plug it back in and see if it will recognize it. I had the same thing with my i-Pod. Good luck.
