USB Hardware Install Errors

Having a problem that I am hopeful that someone can
assist with.

I have a Dell 4400 Desktop system, about 2 years old,
running Windows XP Home Edition, and have never had one
problem with it. However, about a week ago I installed
an application called SpyRemover and ran a scan of my
system. Mistakenly, I removed all of the items that the
utility flagged as problems. All was well until I
rebooted my computer the next time and received an OS
error when Windows tried to start. Luckily I use GoBack
and was able to revert my hard drive back to a state that
would boot. The only lingering issue I have now is that
whenever I plug any USB device into the PC it seems like
it takes forever for it to be recognized, I can see the
CPU sit at 100% for a few minutes, and then I receive the
following error... "The software you are installing for
this hardware: <hardware type> has not passed Windows
Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP"

This is any USB device; my SanDisk mini storage device,
game controller, digital camera, etc.

I can click "Continue Anyway" and it then will finish
installing the device, but only after another minute or
two. This is a pain in the butt. Could I have screwed
up something in the registry? If so, what do I look for
and how do I fix it?

You can try this. Uninstall your USB port from the device
manager and do a reboot. Windows should reinstall the
drivers for your USB when it starts up. Try connecting
your stuff, it should work now!

Thanks Joseph. I have tried disabling and uninstalling
the running USB Host Controllers and USB Root
Controllers, then rebooting, and having Windows reinstall
everything. I still have the same problem as described
above. In addition, when Windows was reinstalling
controllers that I had uninstalled, I got the
same "Windows Logo" error. I hit continue anyway and it
keeps going. It is very strange.

Just an update, as hopefully this can help some other
poor soul like myself. I found some advice in the "Logo
Program" newsgroup on this site. I checked my
Crytography settings (under Control Panel --> Admin
Tools --> Services) and made sure it was set to
Automatic. It was, but I disabled and restarted
anyway...my problem persisted.

Step 2 was to then to go to C:\windows\system32 and
rename the Catroot2 directory to Catroot2old; the
assumption here was that the Catroot2 directory may be
too full. Well, I did this inserted a USB device, and
the system is now behaving normally...no more logo errors.
