usb harddrive help

First off, your MB BIOS needs to be able to boot from a USB device, then you'll need to tell XP while its booting not to loose that USB device, 'cos it will. ;)

Not worth the bother. :)

but you can boot from a A USB flash drive.

The thing is when you plug ypur USB device into whatever machine you want toboot XP to, said machine will try load your USB HDD drivers, and that is where it starts to get tricky, and that is pretty much what Mucks is on about. He is a wise man, and if he say not worth the bothr, then i'd say take it at that. It really isn't worth the hassle, You will get it to work once then struggle there after..

If you are going to boot any other OS from your USB HDD, why not try one of the many Linux distros ?

Or why not use a modded version of Windows PE ?
There's plenty of instructions on how to make it work with write access on the net.
I have a Vista version (licensed) that I use for certain types of installs.
A version of BartPE, which I use on my 16Gb USB Flash drive (I have Office and a few tools on it) and a version of Ubuntu which is on CD for support tools.
