The disk has been formatted and partitioned, It was working with the previous
Win XP-Pro that I had installed, and I had to re-install the Home Edition
version since the Pro wasn't original and was giving me a lot of conflicts.
Now it doesn't work with the Home Edition version, and I tried at another
computer I have on where I had to install the software since has Win 98, and
it doesn't work too. I have another USB pen drive and the ports are working
perfect on both computers.
I tried uninstalling, re-installing the controllers, and when I plug the
device the system recognize it automatically, but then when I go and try to
open the drive there's no letter assigned. This is my only back up from my
documents, what I should do? Please Help!!!

I have a similar but not identical problem. I have a USB2 flash drive and a
Maxtor USB2 external hard drive, which work on my laptop but not my desktop,
both of which are running WinXP pra SP2 with all patches.

BTW it would have been less confusing if you had replied to ghostrider in
your original thread, not least because ghostrider would have been notified
of your reply and would be more likely to add more info.

Having said that, I'm going to start a new thread, because my sequence of
events is not identical to yours.

Not all USB external hard drive enclosures work the same and
it would pay to read the instructions whilst installing the
hard drive into them. One particular issue to check is whether
or not the hard drive has been jumpered properly, as required
by the USB enclosure. If not done properly, then Windows will
not assign a drive letter.
