USB hard drive not recognized

I have a new Lacie hard drive that was working perfectly until yesterday when
I connected it and got absolutely no recognition from the PC. Device manager
doesn't register it at all. Lacie have told me to try and use error checking
tools to locate it but I have no idea how to do that or even if its worth
doing. I checked the event viewer and there is one Removable Storage Device
event ID no.98 logged yesterday but there is no explanation of what event 98
is. I have no idea what to do next and am pretty computer illiterate. Can
anybody help? Thanks.
 
Not sure if this will help, but in the past I have had problems with USB
drives due to power issues. If the Lacie drive is self powered (i.e. it has
its own power supply) make sure this is working properly. If the drive is
powered from USB, try a diferent USB port and if you are going from a USB
hub, dissconect is and try to connect direct to the PC with no other USB
devices on.
