Hi Everybody

I got this "Mantec" branded external USB HDD case, which has a Toshiba notebook 40 gb HDD installed. I have used it to backup files from my old PIII windows 2000 pro machine. Then recently I got a brand new Dell notebook with XP home installed. The funny thing is that this machine won't detect the hard drive at all. Suspecting it was the notebook at first, I tried plugging it into my Athlon XP2000+ PC with XP Pro installed and it ALSO does not detect the drive.

On both machines, when I plug in the drive, the blue LED on the case comes on and I can hear a ticking noise from the drive if I hold it up to my ear.

So now, I suspect that it could be a XP problem as the 2 machines this drive won't work on both have XP installed. Anyone ever had this problem?

I have the same problem, my 2 external cases drivers can be installed and works with Win 98 but it will just cannot be recoqnized in XP. Very frustrating. Have also updated to SP1a and still it does not work, the drives are formetted too. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Not sure if your extenal enclosure has a power supply or
whether it takes it from the USB port.

If the latter, your USB port does not have enough power to
spin up your hard drive.

I have a 3 1/2 that I have to use a external power adapter
to spin it up on some laptops I connect it to.
