My PC (P42.4GHz, 512 MB DDR RAM, 120 GB HDD) is running
Win XP Home. In order to back up and save my critical and
important data files, I bought an external usb box and a
Maxtor hard disk. When connected to the PC, the OS is
able to recognise that a mass usb device is attached to
the computer but it is unable to show the drive in the
window showing all other drives. Could the problem be
that the new HDD is not initiated/formatted?

Please respond. Thanks.

I had the same problem... does anyone know how to fix
this?

Does it matter that the hard drive enclosure is USB 2.0
and that the motherboard only supports USB 1.0 ???

If the USB Storage is 2.0 You need to make sure on your
computer you have USB 2.0...

Now, As far as finding the folder. Try sticking the usb
memeory stick in a different slot.... Also, Right
click on START and goto Explore... See if it's in there.
If not, I would recomend reinstallin the software
(Although with new computers, you shouldnt have to
install the software to use the USB Storage Device)

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
select Disk Management.

The new drive should appear on the right hand side of the screen from where
you can partition, format it and assign it a drive letter. No version of
Windows can 'see' and unformatted drive.
