In the begining their was an internal hard disk, still is. Some time ago I
installed an external usb second hard disk and all was fine. Now when I try
to connect it for some reason it is not recognised, doesn't come up with
autoplay options, and does not appear in my computer window. It does appear
in device manager and claims to be working properly, but does not !

I would welcome any help, have tried trouble shooter searching for new
drivers and rolling back drivers, all I want to do is play my music which is
stored on this disk.

This is becoming one of the most common problems in these groups and in the
forums. Not everyone is infected by this, most aren't and there hasn't been
a rock solid solution yet. M$ knows about it and does almost nothing to
solve it. They had one useless fix. What worked for me was using TweakUI to
assign USB devices permanent drive letters near the end of the alphabet.
Stupid XP gets confused with all the drive changes going on up front. If you
search on Google you'll find a lot of solutions and good luck if any work
for you. This one's on Microsoft and they do nothing.

Thank you, I shall try that, maybe it will also help with My Computer showing
the drive and then scaring me by showing it empty!

Thank you for reminding me of that. I'd forgotten about it.

You have posted this a dozen of times now. Could you
explain a single time how to assign drive letters
by means of TweakUI?
I'm sure that there is no function in TweakUI to do
this.

So it seems. At least I can't find it either. And yet I know I did solve a
problem with a disappearing USB drive once by changing its drive letter from
"G:" to "Z:".

How did I do that?

Probably by means of the Disk Management Console.

Right click on 'My Computer' on the desktop, select
'Magange'. Here under 'Storage'->'Disk Management'.

Or the faster way:

Start->Run
diskmgmt.msc

Here you can right click on a drive and select
'Change Drive Letter and Paths'.

Assigning a different drive letter helps if the USB drives
letter is already used as network share.
But so far there are no reports that is fixes the 'USB drives
not shown in the Windows Explorer' problem...
