I have a few spare hard disks with loads of files on them, which I only need
access to occaisionaly. I am looking for a usb hard disk caddy which will
take an IDE hard disk. I have googled for them but, mostly I can find only
2.5 hd compatible ones. Are they available in 3.5" and also are they any
good

TIA

There are tons of them, you must not have googled the right
phrase.

.... or you could get a 5.25" instead, then needing to use
mounting brackets for a HDD but gaining the ability to
install optical drives.

Can't say I've tried enough of them to tell you which is
best.

Search for 'usb to ide' on Ebay. Nice, easy and cheap. Add a removable drive bay
and you're in bidness.

www.newegg.com - I'm not pushing them but their product line is easy to
review for possibilities. You want the search string "external
enclosure". I have a PHC 500BC enclosure that works fine for occasional
drive swaps. You might look for an externally powered USB to IDE cable
assembly that will make routine swaps easier. I've not used one, but
others have posted that they work fine for diagnostic work on drives.
