When I have any USB device connected to the secondary USB
ports, XP hangs on startup after the XP splash screen
closes. If I plug a device in after XP boots, XP freezes
instantly. If I disable USB in BIOS, boot the computer,
reboot, than re-enable USB in BIOS, the system functions
correctly until it is restarted. (Legacy USB is off) All
latest service packs & patches are installed. MSI 845GE
Max mobo, P4 2.56 cpu, 512mb sdram

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you, but this sounds similar to my problem ("USB 2.0 devices cause system to lock up"). Someone suggested that I might have an inadequate power supply - I've tried disconnected devices to reduce power usage but to no avail. Have you had any luck yet?

No I haven't. I suspect XP is altering some BIOS
setting, because the system runs fine until XP is
restarted. I'm on my second power supply

Windows does not alter the BIOS. The BIOS is firmware on
the mobo.
