There are various older computers that are running Win98 or newer but
the motherboard and cabinet don't support USB.

Is there an interface board that will add USB support (including
USB sockets) to the machines?

Thanks for any info.

You can buy PCI boards with 4 or so USB connectors for about $10. Look at
your favorite online or retail store and you should find them. I have used
them successfully with Win 98.

Anything made during the Win98 era should already support
USB, just not USB2.

Even so, yes you can buy a PCI USB2.0 card for a few (about
$15 USB) dollars, just make sure it has drivers for your
operating system (Win98?).

Just to add to what has already been said:

If you're running Windows 98, be cautious that the PCI card you buy
support your specific version of Windows 98. I've noticed that some of
the Belkin cards support Windows 98 *Second Edition* or better.

If it's that old then you may want to upgrade to a newer mboard to get the
benefit of faster speed and saving some buck on USB card etc.. Mboard is so
cheap these days to let the minor problem bothers you.

I recently upgraded five clunkers to USB2 by installing cards
made by StarTech. There's a picture of a smiling Chinese woman
on the box.

Three of the cards worked perfectly. Two were DOA. The woman
is smiling because her company is saving big bucks (or Yen) by
leaving the quality control to the end-user.

Replacements worked. All five machines happily support USB2
under w2k and linux.

With this level of quality manufacturing, I would replace all 5
boards. By cards of another brand.

The smile on the box will last. But will yours ?

These are my own machines and I'm willing to gamble for the low
price I paid. If I were doing an upgrade for somebody else, I'd
prefer to use something better, but I have a hunch I'd have a hard
time finding much in the way of reviews for so humble a component
and higher price is no measure of goodness.

It is risky to disappoint a smiling woman. And even riskier to
disappoint an unsmiling woman!

Yes there is. You can buy a PCI card that adds USB ability to the computer
IF you are running Win 98SE or later as the OS.
